IT’S NOT everyday that a Spiritualist book is published by a world renowned physical medium. As such, I was delighted to receive Stewart Alexander’s Memoirs recently and have spent many a happy hour savouring the treasure trove of anecdotes and thought provoking views expressed therein. I am always intrigued when sceptics proclaim that they can reproduce the occurrences of the seance room. Love Tarot Readings

The tarot (first known as tarocchi, also tarock and similar names), is a pack of cards (most commonly numbering seventy-eight), used from the mid fifteenth century in various parts of Europe to play card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways.

How A Tarot Reading Works

By: Jackson Swift

You might have heard about tarot cards being used for game play? Yes, its not uncommon. But their more popular use is for divination or a tarot reading. It can be used to foretell an event, help you decide on something important, or uncover some past events that influence your life.

When going for a tarot reading, there are some terms you need to learn:

Reader

This is the person with the cards, the one interpreting them for you.

Querent

Well, basically, this is you. The person inquiring from the cards

Spread

How the cards are laid out on the table

Significator

The card that represents the question being asked or the querent

Before a reading begins, you may be asked to shuffle the deck. This is believed to be a good way to influence the cards with your touch. You should concentrate on your question (if you have one), while doing this. If you are getting an online tarot reading, it may work in a different way. Though you are not able to touch the cards physically, there can be graphical representations of them. Some online tarot readers may simply ask you to concentrate on your question while they do the shuffling for you.

Once the shuffling is done and the cards have been laid out in a certain spread, the reading can begin. There are two types of tarot readings: open and question reading.

Question readings address a specific question or problem area. When going in for one, try to keep your questions as open to options as possible, be focused, stay neutral and be positive that you will find your answers.

Open readings, on the other hand, address the larger scheme of things. This is the kind of reading to look for when you are entering a new phase in life, such as deciding to have children, starting on a new career path or getting married.

Your very first tarot reading can be quite an experience. All it takes is a little open-mindedness to help you enjoy it. At the end of your reading, the decision is still your own. The cards are there to guide you, not dictate your life.

Ever tried learning how to read tarot cards? This is one of the most popular divination tools around. The use of cards to foretell the future is called cartomancy. However, tarot cards are also pretty popular for playing games. Its not all about magic and the occult with these cards. In fact, they gained so much popularity over the years that the cards themselves have evolved extensively.

You may hear about different deck types and the characters in them. Two of the major divisions among tarot cards are the Major Arcana and the Minor Aracana. These are simply not a matter of peculiarity in decks. They are two different breeds of tarot cards all together.

The Major Arcana cards is composed of 22 cards numbered from zero to twenty-one. Here, you will find the following cards: The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgment and The World. They are often interpreted as describing the querants progress in life or the journey he or she is currently taking. These cards are also called trump cards.

The work below was sent to me by an anonymous contributor. From what I was told it is an excerpt from a much larger piece of work by P. D. Ouspensky that was published in the early part of the 20th Century. Apparently Ouspensky rearranged the cards of the Major Arcana and then gave his imagination free rein to journey through them. The text below is the result of his venture. The writing is quite eloquent at times and certainly merits an audience. The cards and descriptions are presented in the same order as the author used.

Many people have tried to work out correspondences between astrology and the tarot—and then someone else comes along, disagrees with them, and works out a new scheme, which also has its advantages and its drawbacks. Jessica and Nancy believe that the court cards can sensibly be assigned zodiac connections, but not the rest of the cards.
  • Dreams, Inner Journeys, and the Cards
When we think of the tarot or other oracles, we usually think of them as providing insight and information about what is going on in our external world—the world of action and reaction. But these same symbols can act as communication between many realms—inner, outer, spirit, faery, angelic, and "dreamtime" (the realm of myth and potential where the unmanifest is real). We can use the cards to help us to interpret an inner journey or a dream—and we can use a dream or an inner journey to help us interpret a card reading. Both ways work and both ways enrich our insight into our personal symbolism. Let's consider some of the ways we can cross-fertilize our understanding of these symbols as they appear in the cards, in the world, and in our inner worlds.
